| What to look for when visiting a school |

A check list for parents
A checklist for parents who are school shopping, compiled by Kirsten Sansom from the annual preschool information day at Tokyo American Club. metropolis article
1. Does the school provide a healthy and safe environment for children? Are children under adult supervision at all times? Does the building have good lighting and ventilation?
2. Is there a wide variety of materials and equipment? Are they age-appropriate? Do they promote gross motor and fine motor skills, language development, social development and creative and expressive arts?
3. Does the school provide nutritious meals and/or snacks? How does the school handle special nutritional needs such as food allergies?
4. Are there enough adults to respond to each child individually? What is the teacher-child ratio?
5. Are interactions between adults and children frequent, respectful, warm and caring?
6. Are the teachers specially trained in keeping with the school's particular philosophy? Can the staff adequately answer your questions about the program's specifics? What are the staff qualifications? Are there trained specialists on staff for art, music, drama and language?
7. Are planned activities appropriate to a child's age and development? Does the program stimulate a child creatively, intellectually, physically, and socially with a balance of free play, outdoor play and group activities?
8. Does the school have a consistent discipline policy? Does the policy encourage positive behavior or is it punitive? What methods are used during the discipline process?
9. Is regular communication with parents encouraged? Are parents welcome visitors to the school? What mediums are used to communicate with the parents?
10. Are parent-teacher conferences scheduled at least once a year, and at other times when requested, to discuss a child's progress and accomplishments or any difficulties at home or at school?
11. Has the school developed a standard plan with regard to emergency procedures? If a child needs emergency medical treatment, where will he or she be taken? In the event of disaster (earthquake, fire, etc.) what is the proposed course of action? Does the school keep adequate equipment and supplies (food, water, first aid, tools) on hand?
12. Does the school have a toileting policy? Is there a specific age that a child must be toilet trained?
13. Are children taken off the school grounds on a regular basis? If so, what precautions are taken when children take walks outside the school grounds?
